K8trills Teaching Studio Students entrusted in my care are invited to participate in two recitals per year, one in summer, and one in winter. Many are working on achieving the goals required for the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Achievement Award, and the majority of students participate in the Music Teachers Association of California's (MTAC) Certificate of Merit program. Every two years of consecutive study, students receive the MTNA Music Study Award. Many K8trills students have played in the CAPMT/MTNA District Flute Festivals where they are adjudicated on a recital performance by a group of MTNA flute teachers, and in the Southern California School Band And Orchestra Association Solo and Ensemble Festival, where every participating student thus far has received a superior rating. All students are invited to participate in events sponsored by the San Diego Flute Guild as well. As an avid supporter of community music programs, I am honored to serve on the board of directors of the San Diego Flute Guild and the Music Teachers Association of California. Teaching has allowed me to more deeply understand the value of tone and technical studies as essential building blocks that lead to the beautiful repertoire written for flute. In my personal upbringing, I was weaned straight from teething biscuits to Moyse Studies! Many of the Marcel Moyse tone studies as well as other tone and technical studies shared with me by my teachers, have been incorporated into working with varying levels of students. All students memorize the major scales as soon as they can play all 8 notes in the C Major scale. (I'm sure they love this about their lessons!!) After learning the major scales, they learn minor scales, followed by additional octaves and arpeggios that accompany both major and minor scales. Once those are all memorized, then these troopers are guided into the Taffanel-Gaubert, 17 Daily Exercises. The Rubank method books are still favorites for the beginning and intermediate students, for they are well-spaced and include so many practical lessons. The Suzuki method is also a favorite collection to teach the younger students, as they can practice memorization and musical development. Just as a note, I do not employ the Suzuki as my primary teaching method, as a more traditional approach to music education is preferred. Once students move into more intermediate stages of their flute career, an appropriate etude book is selected, such as the Melodious and Progressive Studies, Gariboldi, Anderson, Altes, Soussmann, and Drouet among others. Repertoire appropriate to their musical development is chosen as well. Some collections commonly used in competitions and festivals are the Moyse, 40 Little Pieces: Belwin, Master Flute Solos; Robert Cavally, 24 Short Concert Pieces. For more advanced students I refer to a beautiful "Practice Outline" developed over the years by my mom, Maralyn Prestia. This is quite a compilation, and although she says that something of this nature is never really complete, it is an appreciated guide from one who has gone before me! One other exciting aspect in my studio, is that younger students who enjoy piccolo are not discouraged to do so! I have found that starting them as young as possible on piccolo allows them to develop the strength and beauty of tone needed to play this tiny cousin to the flute! As piccolo playing often becomes something students "survive" or are fearful of, this has been quite a successful alternative to starting students later in their development. However, as a precaution, I keep a watchful eye towards any development of tension in the embouchure when the student creates too small of a hole for the air to pass through. A solution to this tendency is to teach a still, yet not forced shape to the lips. Students may develop tension on flute too, but a devoted student will out create this just as well on piccolo as on flute. Experience has shown me that the smaller and more refined air column created to play the piccolo creates a more clear tone on the flute as a result. It's been such a joy to encourage students to work on becoming more comfortable and secure in switching back and forth between flute and piccolo, and maintaining a flexible embouchure to ensure that the lips do not become too tight when returning to the flute. One can play anything on piccolo that they would play on flute. Many younger students even seem to enjoy playing their scales and long tones on piccolo one day, and flute the next. There are a number of gems for piccolo written for beginning and intermediate students. In the Belwin Intermediate Collection of Flute Solos, there are several pieces arranged by Snell; The Nightingale Polka, Rondo Capriccio, and Cuckoo are some examples of pieces written for flute that work GREAT on piccolo for someone just beginning to learn. These pieces have a moderate range, not too difficult a rhythmic spectrum, yet are fun and challenging for the student to play! If you are an NFA member, their newly added "Louis Lewis" collection is fantastic, and can be checked out from the NFA library. If you need a recommendation on a piccolo, please feel free to email! Lastly, all students are invited to participate in workshops, flute fairs, NFA conventions, flute choirs and anything else that may inspire them musically and flutistically. For example, in 2008, students participated in the LA Philharmonic's educational outreach program, "Music Matters" where students played in a master class and workshop with Sir James Galway and Lady Jeane Galway. The students were thrilled to take two trips to Hollywood where they performed, and then attended the Hollywood Bowl concert featuring Sir Galway, B. B. King and Liza Manelli. In 2009 her students have traveled to the Colburn School in Los Angeles to particiate in master classes with Christina Jennings, to the University of Redlands to for a day with Walfrid Kujala, and to San Diego to hear Amy Porter teach and perform. |

Special remarks from students and parents: ~ I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am to have had you for a teacher for these past few years. You've been a role model and a great friend. You have changed my life for the better in so many ways. Seriously, I could not be who or where I am today without your help and support. We've had so many fun times together. There's too many to write, but some I'll always remember are: our trip to LA for Christina Jennings, Wally Kujala flute day, and so much more! I love you and respect you so much. I'll never forget you. You inspire me as well as your other students. You are the best teacher EVER! Thanks so much for everything! Love, Michele Beam (Student, 2006 - 2009) ~ I just want to thank you for being my teacher this year. I've learned so much from you, and we did so many things. I loved going to all the Master Classes with everyone, and I always want to go to more. I loved hearing you play at all of your concerts. You're wonderful in every way, Kate. Thank you so much. - Love Megan Thudium (Student, June, 2009) ~ You are an inspirational teacher! You've taught me so much and I could have never made it this far without you and your fantastic teaching skills. XOXO Patricia Bradley (Student, 2006 - 2009) ~ Love, love, love your beautiful way with Olivia, and all your remarkable students. The most important thing for my daughter was to capture the love for flute before the passionate light faded. Her light started glowing brighter from the first smile and encouraging word you shared with her. Am looking forward to many more sessions between you and Olivia. Thank you! Your fan, Tamera Davis (Mother of student, January - 2009) ~ Congratulations to you and your students!!!!!!!! The recital last night was so awesome! I LOVED hearing every single one of your students! It was the best recital I have EVER attended!! Your students looked happy (even despite the expected nervousness of the occasion) and they played so well! So many had a beautiful tone and were well prepared! Also, they looked and conducted themselves very professionally. I can see why you are busting your buttons with pride!!! As well, the church, so festively decorated, was a beautiful and acoustically friendly venue. You are a gifted teacher. Your love for the flute and your students shows through and you bring out the very best in your aspiring student flutists with your humor, your stories, your professionalism, and your belief that we can all DO IT! Kathy and Allison Hamilton (Mother and daughter, both students, December - 2008) ~ Thank you so much for taking Michele out to LA with you. What a great experience that was for her! She also really enjoyed the Symphony at the Temecula Winery and thank you for that also. Also -- I want to thank you for all the effort you have put into doing research and helping Michele choose the various colleges. She really has great respect for your professional opinion about the music, the lessons, the schools, the programs. You have been a very positive mentor for her, and we appreciate that very much. Marie Beam (Mother of student, November - 2008) ~ Abby had her first rehearsal today and came home very excited and continued to play for an additional 3-4 hours! There are 5 flutes and they gave her all first flute parts. We are very proud and I know she has been with you only a short time, but I can honestly say you have had a great impact on her! Thank you, Karen Black (Mother of student, September - 2008) ~ I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you Thank You for your kind words to Breanna on Monday. She has worked so hard on her recital piece. Thank you so much for being so encouraging and so supportive with your words. You are so sweet and such a blessing to both Breanna and me. Thank you for picking her spirit back up and getting her back on her feet. Thanks again Kate, Theresa Ohler (Mother of student, November - 2007) |
